TRANSPORTS OF DELIGHT: FROM HORSE TO HOVERCRAFT

ROAD TRANSPORT BEFORE THE MOTOR CAR

Scotland’s first stagecoach service opened between Edinburgh and Leith in 1610. It failed, largely because of the poor quality of the roads. Road conditions saw off many subsequent attempts to run stagecoaches, and it wasn’t until the early 1700s that stagecoaches finally became part of the usual traffic scene in Lowland Scotland.

The Highlands were of course different. Before 1725 there was only one road in the whole of the Highlands that was able to take wheeled traffic.
